They are urticating setae, hairs basically covered with backward pointing barbs. In some of the hairs the end of the hair has forward pointing barbs. They're a defense mechanism. Being loosely attached, the spider can kick them off onto a predator. They get into the pores of your skin and release a chemical of some sort that causes itching. The physical makeup also causes itching. I've found that the more often you're exposed to them the worse the itching becomes, at least in my case. At first I was unaffected by the hairs. Over the years, I've become more and more sensitive to them.Originally posted by BigSam
What do these hairs do to you ?? When we where getting him from the store, the guy was messing with a him and he started throwing hiars.
Sam,
At first, the B. boehmei hairs didn't effect me. Eventually they did though, and are very itchy. Effects can last for an hour or more. At first it lasted maybe 15 minutes to a half hour, but with each successive "attack" the length of the itchiness increased. I've been itching for hours before. I haven't handled my two girls for some time now due to that. I've found the B. boehmei hairs to be pretty itchy, not as bad as T. apophysis or T. blondi, but worse than others. Itchiness usually starts at the hands and then works it's way up the arms to the neck and shoulders and then all over! lol! My wife can't even handle them or her arms break out whereever they walk, and they didn't even kick hairs! Pretty weird!Originally posted by BigSam
How long does the after affects last ?? I think I handle it.
I might try to pick him up, but I don't know yet.
Sam,
I've tried scrubbing. It doesn't help due to it being a chemical reaction. Itching it doesn't even help. I've heard some people have used cortisone cream, but I fail to remember if that helped or not.Originally posted by BigSam
Would a bath help ??
I think I handle a couple hours of incheyness.
Sam,
Lol! yes they are!Originally posted by BigSam
Well I know one thing, he can eat like a pig.I gave him a cricket last night, and when I woke up this morning it wasn't there. So I put one in there this morning and it didn't even take him 2 seconds to find it and hit it. He's a power house.
Well it looks like he has no problem eating.
Sam,
Sam, you can use the lid from a peanut butter jar, or a lid from lots of other products as a water dish. I like to use condiment cups of various sizes (adults get a 5.5 oz. cup, smaller juvs get a 3/4 oz. cup, and larger lings get a cap from a bottled water container, small lings get their water from the substrate, no water dish is provided). when the condiment cup is dirty I just toss it and put a new one in. if you have a "smart and final" or "costco" or other similiar type store they will carry the condiment cups.Originally posted by BigSam
G'z sounds like a big problem, and there is no water dish in there. The place I bought him from didn't have one in there, so I have to go get one today or tomorrow.
Sam,
