How to identify a Victorian Funnel-web spider from a Sydney funnel web Spider?

Visually it can be very difficult. Both species can look either jet black or brown, so your best clue is where the specimen was found: H modesta lives only in the Dandenong Ranges area near Melbs and A robusta famously lives only in a small area around Sydney. Secondly if body size is over 3cm (2cm for a male) then it's not H modesta.

If you must know: H modesta has leg II apophyseal swellings AND short, straight emboli (but with the distal part neither twisted nor angled) AND a relatively short labium.
