This is a list of all the currently formally described Brachypelma species. Ones marked with an astericks are in the pet trade.
  • albopilosum*
  • andrewi
  • angustum*
  • annitha* - the consensus is that this will be synonymized with smithi one day
  • auratum*
  • aureoceps
  • baumgarteni*
  • boehmei*
  • embrithes
  • emilia*
  • epicureanum*
  • fossorium*
  • hamorii ? - this is possibly what is being sold as B. pallidum which is not a valid species name any longer
  • klaasi*
  • ruhnaui*
  • sabulosum*
  • smithi*
  • vagans*

So, you might want to re-think that 2 or 3 number, it's more like at least 8.

andrewi
aureoceps
embrithes
hamorii
These 4 are probably synomyms to other species.

ruhnaui
Will be transfered to Aphonopelma later on.

and the latest:
Brachypelma schroederi
Described this year, my guess its just a color form of vagans or ohter species.

Lelle, do you have any further info on the background for this? This is the first I've heard of a genus change for ruhnaui, but I don't find it that surprising. One of the things I've thought to myself while raising a ruhaui sling is that it doesn't bear much resemblance to other Brachypelma that I've raised.

The hamorii one is what I question: synonymized to what? I've read of Rick West speculating it might be what is sold as pallidum which is why I said that above. Because if what is sold as pallidum isn't actually hamorii, then what is it? It bears no resemblance to any of the common Brachy's but appears by all signs to genuninely be a Brachypelma. Of course, it wouldn't be the first time there was an undescribed species being sold as something else, either.

No I read it in a post by Rick West. I dont have any other info.

Hamorii yes, perhaps Aphonopelma or whatever. I remember I got a B. pallidum but it had a triangle patch just like emilia - crosses are a alternative aswell. Some suspect baumgarteni to be a hybrid but I doubt that.
The Brachypelma genus is in need of a total revision. But what genus isnt ?...

I've heard this from a few people besides Rick West as well. Truthfully when they first came around people were stating not to use permanent ink on your labels as the genus will probably be changed soon...
