Hey all, I am new here. I have had my tarantula for just over a year, she is the second pet tarantula I have owned in my life. I am after some advice please.
Some back ground info- I am female, 31 and from Melbourne Australia. Monroe is my Phlogius Stents and she was small (few cm big) when I purchased her. I do not handle her.
She was housed in a Tupperware container for a few months as advised, until she was big enough to put in her terrarium. I left her to get settled in the terrarium, however she did not. she clung to the roof for a few days until I finally got up the nerve to get her off and put her back in her Tupperware container. She lived in there for a further few months until I trailed her again in her terrarium. Second time success. As you can see, she has a skull as her house which she is inside 99% of the time. I barely saw her and she would not eat for months. Her abdomen had slowly been getting smaller and smaller. She would maybe eat one cricket every few months, if that. I recently bought her king meal worms and have seen her eat at least 2. I'm unable to clean inside the skull because it does not open. I didn't think that through. Anyway, I saw her yesterday and she has plumped up more in her abdomen (picture below).
Ideally I want to remove her from the skull, and remove it from her terrarium. I want to replace it with something that I have more control in keeping an eye on her. I would have to delicately excavate her out of the skull. I have a large ornamental log to replace it with that I can move off her and clean in and around.
I am concerned with how I am going to removing her from the skull because she can be feisty. Additionally, I am worried she might go off her food for months again afterwards. However, now would be a good time to do it, considering she has eaten the king meal worms recently. I am torn because I have also read a spider not seen is a happy spider! Am I being selfish in wanting to see her more? or should I just leave her alone?
Whats your opinions please?
