ok .. i dont know if this has been discussed before , but something came across my mind when i saw an odinary house spider today ..

do you think it is a good idea to keep a house spider in the same tank as tarantulas ?

the reason i would keep the house spider with the tarantula is simple, the house spider can eat up anything that is too small for the T to eat for example fruit flies, mosquitos, houseflies etc .. [once in a while i see these in my tank] so do you guys out there think its a good idea ?

i tried keeping a small frog together with my scorpion, the scorpion doesnt eat it, but the frog eats up ants that goes into the tank .. [sometimes the scorp gives the frog a "scorpion ride" on its back LOL]

My husband had a G.rosea and a jumping spider (i believe) in the same tank long time ago . The jumping spider would say on top of the tank while the G.rosea was on the bottom. They would take turns getting water and they ate great as well.

Well my main concern would be if they mated and made a super spider, that took over your house and barn, and you had to hunt down the queen so that you could kill the species of spiders that you inadvertantly created....oh wait that was arachnophobia. just ignore me.

Would the other spider bother the T while molting?

I LOVE those little black jumping spiders with the green eyes, I'd like to know if this works out, but I'd still be wary. Seems like Murphy's Law invades whenever I try something people say is easy or works perfectly fine.

I will say from unintentional experience that there doesn't seem to be a problem with it. i kepp my A. avic in a 1 gallon plastic jar with a Pepperomia plant. At one point I noticed a very small house spider (Cribellate spp.) had made a web at the base of the plant, and would go down and grab a mite or something out of the substrate. Since the avic's retreat was at the top of the plant, I don't think they ever even encountered each other. I'm guessing the little spider just found it's way in through one of the vent holes in the lid.

There might be a problem of introducing some predator mites or pests with the freely living spider to your tank ... I won't risk that.

There are house spiders (Achaearanea) living in most of my enclosures. Didn't put them there, they just showed up! The only time I remove them is if I notice they're getting the crickets before the tarantulas.

They're the best pest control you can have.
