I was just looking at Google images of the heads of various species, and what struck me was the different sizes and facet numbers of their eyes, as well as their orientations relative to their heads.

I wonder whether the major difference is habitat- you would think cave dwellers might have less need of image forming eyes, but my readings seem to indicate the entire group prefers darkness anyway, though one wonders if enough studies have actually been done, especially on rainforest dwellers where light levels may be rather higher.

It would be interesting if some groups were better at making the most of possession of eyes, and have the neurological equipment to better process images- the heads of those with the bigger eyes seem bigger as well.
