I recently purchased a 7inch female L.Para whom is believed to be gravid. She was mated several times yet of course you never know if it took or not. She is a proven breeder she had a clutch last year.

When I recieved her I quickly noticed these little red color spots on her abdomen. Looked kinda like blood spots that we can get under our skin when we are pinched or something. She scraped a lot of her hair off during the trip of course. She is doing fine and loves her new home and appetite is great.

Question: Have you seen this on any of your T's abdomens before? Does she look gravid? I know it would just be a guess but I still welcome the guesses :)

God bless, James Sanders

She has flicked herself bare and has gone so far as to create abrasions which are being sclerified. Those "spots" are the abrasions. The animal is obviously stressed, and if she is gravid, the likelihood that she will not destroy the sac is pretty low.

So, as a keeper, you need to remove the stress, whatever that maybe. Good luck.

Pretty sure the stress was from postage? At least that's what i inferred from the OP. A few of my LPs have arrived in this state just because they didn't enjoy transit.

maybe gravid, or more likely just fed really well... mine had a huge egg shaped abdomen a while ago, and i slowed down as to not hurt her. shes been in premolt for a bit now, and should do so anyday. her last molt was feb 23rd so im assuming by 23rd of this month i should have a giant spider... if you say your lp is 7 inches how do you measure... mine looks way bigger, however im lookin at mine in real life, and not in a pic... dont stress the abrasions.. all that pink should soon turn blackish brownish greenish and shell molt into a pretty and noticably smaller abdomened t

and on a side note, if your t is stressed badly, you can find a nice black sheet or pillow case and shroud her enclosure in it for a few days the way youd cover a birds cage at nite. shell get used to her new home in private, and be happy and settled in in no time

@BrynWilliams; yes she arrived in this shape and I figured it was hating the ride here also. She doesn't act stressed at all now in her new home.

@Grayzone: I haven't really tried to measure her at all because I just recieved her from Mark at Animal Magic. He said she was about that big and honestly I just trusted him :) I haven't tried to manipulate her at all because of her trip here and possibly being gravid etc. I put her in her new home and have left her alone beside dropping a couple Crickets to her which she devoured and taking some pics.

But I try to measure my T's in their normal stance from front to back legs like Paul Becker does on his site.

If it's truly a 7in spider, she may not go into premolt for a while.

Besides the OP isn't worried about the size of the abdomen, they are worried about some discolored spots.

And if it's been bred, i'm sure the OP is hoping it won't molt soon.

@NikiP your exactly right! I was concerned about the abrasions because I have not seen this before with any of my T's. Far as if she is gravid I hope so because I do love this species it is one of my Favs. But obviously her health is my main concern. I haven't really messed with her because of her just arriving this week and obviously she is stressed. But just glancing at her through the glass I would say she is about 6inches or so but of course its hard to tell unless she relax's and stretches out :)
