Has anyone else been nipped by their Madagascar hissing cockroaches?

My son and I are loving having pet hissers! We were just shocked when a couple of them pinched our skin while walking along our hands and arms! Definitely stung and left red marks! Any ideas why this happened? Were they just hungry? Kind of freaked us out! Thanks!

Hissing roaches, indeed many roach species, will chew on human skin as they are held; I know for millipedes this is probably because they mistake the keratin in our skin for chitin, which they use to build their exoskeletons, and I suspect this is likely true for roaches too.

Thanks,
