Hoping someone with some experience w/ these guys might be able to shed some light on this odd situation...
About a month ago, I got a call from a friend who trapped an "enormous" (lol) spider in their home & asked me to come get it. When I got there I ID it as a Hacklemesh weaver. It was in bad shape though. Missing half a leg and it appeared dehydrated & it's abdomen was super skinny. I took it home, put it in quarantine & began to nurse it back to health. Skip forward to present day & she is thriving. I hadn't really decided what to do with her yet, when yesterday, I noticed something new, like a round blob, obstructing the entrance of her web tube & another new round blob right outside the exit of her tube. I instantly wondered if they were egg sacs. After examining them carefully, they are definitely 2 individual & seperate egg sacs. I searched everywhere online & cannot find any examples of them depositing 2. House spiders, yes. Cellar spiders, yes. Does anyone have experience breeding/raising these guys? I read that the babies normally cannibalize the mother, but if I can provide the babies food, would it be terrible to separate the babies now & try to rear them separately, while sparing the mother? Any thoughts, advice?? There #s in our area are STRONG, but the plan will still be to release the babies. *Picture is from about a week ago

What’s your plan for the mother? Did you want to keep her? I have a few of these and while I’ve never bred them they’re easily one of my favorite spiders. Regardless a lot of studies on matriphagy showed that slings will just grow quicker and it isn’t necessary for their overall survival in captivity.

My plan for her was to keep her. She is such a cool spider!
I appreciate the info about the slings. I hate to remove the sacs & stress her out, but I don't want to lose her if I can help it. I'm sure I'll use all the wrong words in spider breeding, as ive never done it before, but I'd like to try to hatch the sacs in another enclosure & see what happens. Maybe pulling as many out & trying to rear seperatly if I can. I'd be happy to send you a few slings if I can get them to a safe shipping size. Where are you located? I'm in PA, USA

I was looking into this a bit further, & I believe I may have misidentified her. I believe she is a Coras sp. Still a Funnel Web spider & from what I read, there are instances of this species showing examples of matriphagy as well. So, I suppose I'm still in the same boat. I guess I'm still hung up on the 2 egg sacs. To me, having raised mostly tarantulas & only a few true spiders, this is really unusual.

Ha Haha while I do appreciate it my house has enough funnel weavers running around it I am in MA, US and they are quite abundant. That said I recommend letting the spiderlings hatch before removing them they are going to have very delicate sacs. Matriphagy isn’t generally something that happens immediately it usually takes a week or so, so she should be safe. Some spiders do indeed have two egg sacs don’t be disappointed if one is a dud a lot of females will weave up a dud sac.

That's crazy. You know, I can't seem to find anything about that online. I think I'm going to send an email to the Entomology dept at Penn State & see if they can point me to some online reading about it. They are pretty great about getting back to me & helping me with my weird & random questions. Thanks man!
