I made the decision to leave the sac with my female H.Minax/Vinworthi - since I was nervous about trying to get it out of her burrow, which goes down at least 8 inches into the substrate. I walked into the T room after work today and here is what I found:

Needless to say, the caravan extended well down the mouth of the burrow, so I don't know what the spiderling count is going to be. Now I get to try and round them up without HER getting me!

Congratulations!!!! Cup her first and get her out of your way, then you will have to dig up the burrow carefully and go through every bit of webbing looking for babies.
You have my sympathy, we had to do that with an OBT and I've owned a minax/vonwirthi before so I know what you are up against. Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks! I'll have to try and catch her one night this week. She is quick to head underground at the slightest sound....

She is a WC female that I was able to breed (her mate has since passed on after 4 dates with her and a loaned breeding attempt as well - but his DNA lives on!)

Hello,
I think by "Vinworthi" you mean whats usually sold as Haplopelma sp."Vonwirthi" or sometimes sp."Vietnam".
Do you have any photos of the female? Also how did you come to the conclusion that both the male and female are the same species? Were they from the same import?
To avoid any further confusion with pet trade material in this genus what will you label the spiders as when you sell them?

Cool! Those little guys look pretty far advanced too. Do you think any got out before you found them?

I'm also curious about the answer to Syndicates queston. Males in this genus always look so much alike.

Both the male and female were sold as H. minax to the person I bought the pair from. The female was later thought to be sp. Vonwirthi based on pics that I had posted. I had lent the male out to another T owner for a breeding attempt with his H. Minax, and they were not at all responsive to each other, so I am making an assumption (I know what they say....) that the male was also sp. Vonwirthi.

When I first saw the female rolling the sac up her burrow entrance (about 1 month ago or more now) I covered the entire opening of the cage with window screen, then closed the plexi lid (drilled) over that. I didn't want any to get out through the air holes in the plexi.

Well - the round up is complete!

It took my wife and I almost 2 hours to extract the mother from her burrow and then dig out the spiderlings! It seemed like everytime we thought we had found the last one, another one would pop out of the substrate....

We didn't count them, but I would say the round up had to be somewhere between 75-100....maybe more.....
