I have a 50 gallon glass terranium and I was thinking of putting in dividers so I have space to put in 3 tarantulas. I have seen people do this before but I'm not sure if it's a good idea.
Any suggestions?

If you can make it all perfectly sealed and tight, then why not. I've done it before with many tanks. Just make sure the lid can be securely placed on with no space in between the divider and top. Make sure the divider it covers and connects to all sides(sides, bottom, top).

Does it matter if I use plastic or glass dividers? Also, what is recommended to seal the edges. I'm a little worried about harmful fumes

ooo, i have a 30-gal divided into 3 and have 3 G roseas in there! it's great fun when people come over, a much better display cage. i have used glass to separate, it looks very good. i use clear caulk to seal the edges, dries nice, no white crap. but like novak said, make double sure everything is sealed!! i don't believe the caulk would be a problem with fumes, especially if you give a day or two to dry. and make sure there's plenty of ventilation, you won't have a problem. enjoy! and post pics when it's done!

Widowman10,
What kind of top do you have on your enclosure?
What did you use to make sure one doesn't squeeze through the top into the next enclosure?

Is it possible for you to send me pictures?

Thanks for all the help so far

I would recommend aquarium sealant... fumes disappear in short time. It is water proof and seems to hold the divider up nicely. I used a thicker cut of plexi glass and taped off the area I didn't want sealed and then pulled the tape off right after I finished, I put the sealant on both sides. It made a nice even layer of sealant and thus a more professional appearance.

I use aquarium sealant* or GE silicone II** (which comes in clear or colors and is non-toxic) to divide up tanks. You can use plexi or glass, but I find that glass is more aesthetic. (Plexi scratches easier, so if you have an issue there... glass is better)

You can either have the dividers cut tall enough to be flush with the top or you can add pieces in between to make the top flush... like pieces of wood or something.

Good Luck! Definitely post pics when you get started and get finished... it would be a great tutorial for others to use later. :)

well, with my aquarium i have a top that fits directly over the top. nothing fancy, just a screened mesh lid with parts that fit over the aquarium. i think they sell the plain simple lids at petco or someplace like that.
to make sure nobody squeezes through (which i have a male in the middle, so that's important;) ) i put the plexiglass piece snug up against the inside top edge, and any space above that and below the lid, i will put a thin strip of plywood (or other such material that matches the tank). that leaves virtually no gaps at the top. and there are no gaps on the sides b/c i caulked it. hope this helps!!:D oh- and i'm going out of town for almost 2 weeks soon here, so pics i'm afraid won't be possible:8o plus i have a sucky camera...

any other questions? just let me know!!

AneesasMuse, and Heather, i agree! good choice and advice;)

oh, one more thing- to make sure your piece of plexi/glass lines up flush with the top, what i have done before is to lay a piece of wood on the bottom of the tank and center the plexi on that. then, when you have the correct height, fix the glass on the wood in place, and bury the wood. this way you will just see the plexi/glass growing up from the bottom, and it gives you a perfect height adjustor.;)

Since 55's are so tall and thin, you could do a nice arborial set up for Avics or Ornimentals. If you wanted to go larger, a glass set up would be great for T blondi's or apophyis's since the glass is good at holding up humdidity. If you wanted to go for Theraposas or other humid loving ts, go for glass tops that you can get at the pet shop. I did this for my blondi, and simply made ventilation holes in the plastic sections and it works well.

Hmmm...interesting point. I am planning to have a glass aquarium with a wooden lid with some ventilation holes for my tarantula. Would this still be adquate for holding in humidity?
