One of my friends from school was chopping up wood from a cherry tree in his yard and found a bunch of larva/grub things and brought them to me in a jar this morning.

Now there's only one, and I named him Rex, he's a monster {D

Now if anyone can help me ID him that would be super :)

He's a bit smaller than the lighter, the angle is funny so it's hard to tell.

Thanks for any help :D

I really want to keep it. Right now he's in a jar with wood shavings... if anyone knows a better way to keep these I'd appreciate the help :)

Im not sure what they eat, but keeping it in bran might be better than wood chips, provided it will eat the bran. I don't see any harm in trying it, as I doubt it will be eating the wood shavings.

i would think the wood it was found in would be more suitable than bran....

i assume the trees have bin sitting for abit and got a little rotten or was the wood still fresh?.. if the wood was rotting go see if you can get some and put it into a container w/ it, I'm not sure how to keep beetle larvae but i think it would be very similar to D. granti or D. tityus so do some searches on there car requirements

try giving it old dead moist wood from a hard wood deciduous tree like oak, or poplar, etc. make sure the wood is almost completely decayed. also give it some dog food and some leaf littler, not dry crispy leaves but the really wet leaves that are still decaying. looks like he already has some nice size so he might grow a little more before pupation. after he pupates just leave him alone until you see a big beetle in your container months later. good luck, wish i could make a find like that

Ah yes I second that. Ditch the wood shavings, and go get some of the wood from the actual tree it was recovered from.
