Well I guess for now, I'm going to just be happy he puts up with the two I have. We've been together for 4 years, and I couldn't imagine something like a furry spider coming between us. I am still going to keep working on him, and try to show him how amazing they can be. I'm sure I can convince him to let me get just one more, it's going to be hard to narrow down my list to just one though!

phil, still waiting for you to contribute something (anything, really) useful to this or any other thread...

i forgot to add what worked for my mum who was really creeped out by my first t and threatened to squash it: i gave her a huge a. geniculata skin she can show off to her friends - having to defend me and my hobby against them made her side with the t owners. now every time we talk on the phone she asks how the kids are doing ;). so maybe if you got him to side with you against some else's stupid prejudices, he will will admit that ts are not that bad.
well keep waiting and one day you may get your wish and your b.f. has my SYMPATHY !! ;P ;P :wall: :wall:

there is no cure for someone who doesn't want to swallow it...
Tell me about it!!;)

Back on topic... my gf is really scared of spiders, but I'll be moving myself and my collection in with her soon.
Although she doesn't share my enthusiasm, I've found that the more she's around them, and also the more I talk to her / educate her about them, the more accepting she is of them. I guess for some it just takes longer to get over than it does for others.

Mike.

Thankfully, my Ts have never come between relationships. Most everyone who knows about them is creeped out, but they still hang out with me and even occassionally ask me about them. I don't bring them up in conversation too much, since I realize that some people get uncomfortable and upset. My family/friends don't think they're that big a deal to fight over. I've even turned a few people to our side, and although they still hate true spiders (which I can understand), they've become very interested in Ts and if their parents would let them, they'd probably get one. :D

But in my house, most of the time it's a don't-ask-don't-tell kind of thing. My mom and siblings hate looking at my Ts, but my dad has gotten pretty interested and has even been bragging about my hobby to business partners (which is embarrassing for me, but whatever). He likes coming over to look at my A.genic when she's out in the open but once she feels his stomping around (he's never learned to tip-toe) and when he leans in and breathes on her, she darts of out of sight. :p

When I first started the hobby, my older brother would show a huge amount of hatred and loathing toward me and my Ts. He's even threatened to kill them numerous times. He thought they were gross and that I was a weirdo. But the other night he walked in as I was dangling some string in front of my genic (to test her temperament) and she attacked the string with such force and tugged on it, and my brother had a change of heart right there and said "wow, cool." Guess that's the secret! It only takes one big fat hungry genic who plays with string like a kitty cat to change a T-hater. {D

I haven't really had any problems concerning my tarantula. My mom doesn't seem freaked, and she has even began to find some of them pretty lovely. My dad doesn't mind either. He wishes my seemani would be out in the open all the time, but I guess he just hasn't accepted the fact that tarantulas aren't really display pets.

With my friends, I never usually bring them up. I have a few pictures of tarantulas on my psp, and whenever I'm flipping through them and come to a brightly colored t, they get interested and ask more about them. Maybe it's just some ADD case for them and they like bright, shiny things. X)

What I believe, is that if they care about you, they'd take the time to gain a little more knowledge about your hobby. If they like you, then I'm sure they'd appreciate what you enjoy to some extent. I guess with some people you just can't convince them otherwise.

All in all, I think it's a great thing that more people become educated about "creepy crawling" things such as the tarantula and that they aren't after you to suck your blood or steal your brain.
