I have only had one gecko, a golden (Gekko ulikovskii) and I know they can drop their tails. What I want to know is, how easily do they do this, and do they usually survive? Every time I've rehoused mine I've been afraid to actually handle her to get her into the new enclosure because of this. I shouldn't have to rehouse her again, I'm happy with the setup this time, but has anyone had this happen?
Here she is!

They can lose their tales for many reasons with varying degrees of difficulty. They can lose it from a hard tug at their tale. They can also lose it if they're startled and it will just drop off on its own. I wouldn't worry about handling it and having the tale come off. I've owned several species of geckos and handled all of them and none have ever lost their tales.

it can happen very easily but only if they want it to, it is a defence mecchanism that they use against predetors or if startled etc etc..., if a predator grabs them they istantly drop their tail which also wriggles and flicks, to catch the predators attention, so the lizard can make its escape, while the predator chows down on the tail, they have the ability to regenerate their tails although generally speacking it is never the same, so it is best to avoid this, it only reallly happens if you try to pick the lizard up by the tail, there are other instances when the tail may fall off but you would have to have a very very very nervouse lizard, none of which i have ever owned or seen for that matter (and i have, and do own many lizards with the ability to do this), so i dont think you should worry really

ohhh and nice looking lizard by the way hes very nice
