Yeah we thought it looked like something out of a fifties horror/sci-fi movie. He didn't seem to interested but that will inevitably change. We hope to raise him with alot of different experiences-we've outlawed Barney and Mickey in favor of nature and the like. His whole nursery is photos bugs and playful prints of the same.
my four year old was sucked into the barney cult at 2 and quickly recovered. she loves the T's and even helps me to select new ones. kids and T's...it's a beautiful thing.
I love hearing about people who raise their children to be interested in nature. Entirely too many children grow up seeing their parents fear bugs, and reptiles for that matter, and end up thinking that insects and arachnids are a thing to be "squished". I was lucky that when I was little, even though my mother dislikes spiders, my father would catch snakes, turtles, toads, etc... for me to keep for awhile and learn about. He would also show me big spiders and other bugs so I have never feared them. I spent alot of time in the woods behind our house catching every bug that I could find and keeping them as a result. I would love to be able to educate more people in general about invertebrates and reptiles, and I am thrilled when I hear about people who do this, especially with children.
My Dad started with snakes ........... He would always find them in yard, catch them, and show them to me. It made a great learning experience and to this day it bothers me to hear people killing garter snakes, rat snakes, hognose, you name it. He'd also bring me back turtles in his lunchbox!! He is terrified of spiders, but I'm working on that!! ;P
