Unfortunately, this type of thing is common in the exotic animal hobbies. The less "mainstream" the animal, the more ignorance there is even when there is ample information about such an animal available for free. It would seem just because someone has had a large collection for a long time, such a person thinks they know everything about them and even worse seen as experts by other even less knowledgable people. The longer someone has kept tarantulas and the larger the collection, the more they know about them it would seem. In reality though, one doesn't even need to ever keep a live tarantula in captivity to be more of an expert than someone who has a large collection.

The same applies most commonly in the technology world. Just because one has a large amount of computers, has the latest gadgets, and knows how to download and run software on those devices doesn't mean they know anything about how any of it works. But boy they sure think they are experts in information technology!
