My dad has been keeping Ts for 20+ years and today he told me the only way to tell a tarantula is female is if it ISN'T male. Basically if the T doesn't hook out and get its emboli, it's female.

I tried to explain that I knew my seemanni is female because I saw her spermatheca and he said nope you can't trust ventral sexing, can't trust molt sexing, just have to wait and see if it hooks out.

What a doofus.

Experience does in fact equate to knowledge in most cases, but your dad is just straight up wrong. It doesn't matter how many years you have been doing something if you have been doing it wrong the whole time. :embarrassed:

I wonder what he would do if he got a species that doesn't have tibial hooks. ALL FEMALE! lolz
A Chilobrachys fimbriatus MM doesn't possess at all the 'tibial hooks', like other Theraphosidae species. Yet doesn't exists a MM Theraphosidae without the 'boxing gloves', therefore assuming gender u_u

One of my martial arts instructors always made a statement that I think applies here. Practice doesn't make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect.

To be fair though the only thing he is wrong about it there are more than just that one way to tell if it's a female. If the T reached it's mature size a year or two back and you still don't have a usable molt and it's not a MM then it's most likely a female.

Are their better ways to determine the sex of a species? Yeah. Can his way work? Yeah. I'd give this method about as good odds (I'd prob give it better odds) as some of the vent sexing I've seen.

I have two MM that this was the only way I knew what they were. They kept chewing the molts and then one day MM. :D

The same thing we all do... look for the boxing gloves they all have. :p

Hook out is term often used just to describe a MM's final molt. I've seen it used for species that have hooks and ones that don't. Not technically correct but regularly used that way.

Your father is wrong. I'm glad you are better than the previous generation so far ;)

Hi all I'm sorry to post on your discussion but I'm not sure how to start my own thread. I'm trying to figure out the sex of my little guy

Your spider is a male and for future refrence, photos in attempt to sex ventrally, belong here>http://arachnoboards.com/gallery/categories/epiandrous-fusillae-sexing.9/

I would get used to navigating this site because some people get ugly about it, and the mods dont like it either! Just a friendly heads up
Thank you..... I've been doing research and I came to the conclusion it is a male but wanted other opinions. I tried the "add media" but it didn't allow me to do anything.

Sorry again
