Hi ppls

My milksnake has turned sphycotic. I need to get him out to clean him but how? He's to nasty and aggressive. GGRRR. I believe he is about 5 feet long. Any suggestions???

What is with aggression? Every animal I have that's suppose to be aggressive isn't and every animal I have that isn't suppose to be aggressive is? I just can't get a normal animal can I?

Cheers,

Sometimes agressiveness in snakes could be hunger or an upcoming shed. Was it always like this?

yea always. It even tries to attack me through the glass when I am checking my Ts or something. I feed it a rat pup. I always thought that was enough?

How big around is the snake, and how big are the rat pups? I would think they'd be awful small for a five-foot snake. :?

Hmm you might want to try and place the enclosure in a dark spot so it can cool off, maybe it's just stressed out and feels bothered and forced if it's being cornered. Or maybe it's still hungry do you have any more of those pups to give it? Maybe it just needs to be in a dark quiet place for awhile to relax.

He has been shedding a lot this year.
Cheers,
with that statement, it sounds like a husbandry problem, if your snake is shedding more than once month there is probably something wrong with the environment it is in.

Well maybe it hasn't been shedding once a month, just A LOT more then my corn snake put it that way. The substrate I use is a bedding lotsa stores use for rodents. It's very soft on the snakes. I have a water dish and some gift rap rolles :)

Anything wrong with that?

Couple ideas for you:

First, if its 5 feet long, one mouse pup probably is not going to cut it. I had 3 milks all about 4' and they each ate 3 large mice or one small rat every week or so. You would be surprised what an appetite these guys have. Also, rat pups are very fatty and not very nutritious.

The aspen is probably ok, maybe a little dry. If she is having any trouble shedding, you could try a bedding with more moisture. I usually used aspen and made a humid hide out of a big butter tub. Cut about a 2" hole in the lid of the tub, stuff it with some paper towels and wet them down, put the lid back on. Snake can crawl in, soak all they want, and the bedding stays dry. Just make sure to keep it clean.

Good luck!

wow, your feeding your 5 ft just a rat pup??? my 2 ft is eating a rat pup happily every week. you might want to try getting something a bit bigger. I know I'd be grumpy if I was hungry.

As a rule, the prey item should be 1-1.5 times the width of the fattest part of the snake's body.

What's the animal's weight like? Is the body nice and round, or can you clearly see the backbone (ie, the body is kind of tear-shaped)?

As Mushroom said, prey should be just about or a hair bigger than the fattest part of the snake. A small adult rat should do nicely.

I am assuming you are feeding Frozen/thawed here - correct? If not, make sure you pre-kill any live prey. Since your snake is not used to eating fully developed animals, and if you were feeding live pups before, s/he may not be accuostomed to killing their prey and could be injured by a live rat.

Hmm if it's still agressive by now then you should definetely feed it ASAP and see if it calms down after having getting full.

no I feed live. My snakes refuse everything thawed. Ya, the rat pups I feed are as wide if not a little more then the width of the snake. Should I feed 2 pups then?
