Dolphin extinction

A rare species of dolphin unique to China has just been declared extinct. Looks like humanity has done it again....

If you get the chance, get your hands on a copy of "Last Chance to See" by Douglas Adams (of "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" fame). It is his account of a trip around the world to see endangered species, including the dolphin. In addition to being somewhat informative it is, of course, incredibly funny.

Ah, here is a link to an article: www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/12/13/tech/main2253676.shtml Basically it says that the only Yangtze River dolphin in captivity died in 2002. A resent search for any more of the species has proven unfruitful. There is a good chance that a few dolphins survive, but not enough to sustain the population. So they at very least classified as "functionally extinct" for there is no longer enough genetic diversety to perpetuate the species. ~ Rex

I'll second that recommendation. It's quite funny, given the subject manner. But then, it was written by Douglas Adams, so how could it not be?
