How many of you name your tarantulas? Just curious.

And while we're at it, do any of you do anything special if one dies? or do you just toss it in the trash? (Or preserve it?)

I never actually named any, I just call them by what they are.

And dead spiders I just toss in the trash. I WOULD feed it off, but I've never had one die at a feedable size. They're always too big or too small. (I had a problem similiar to MizM? I think that's who it was.. My cat knocked two cages off a shelf, killing one.)

Besides our cats the only animals that have names in our house are the ones that our nieces and nephews named. I am sure as our son gets older more will end up with names.

I let a friends daughter name all of mine. She even insited that name tags be posted on all the cages so I did it was pretty cute. She really came up with some interesting names.

i don't name my t's.
my collection is a little bit large for me to think of a meaningful name for each one.

i did in the beginning and found i never called/referred to them by their names anyway :)

We've covered this before, but since you linked it to arachnid funerary customs, I'll answer :)

I stopped regularly naming bugs after my first 2 Ts, however, I still will stick a monicker on one if something inspires it. It's rare though, out of over 50 Ts currently in the collection, only 1 has a name.

As for when they die, I practice what Scott once called a Brooklyn funeral: into the garbage can they go (and a big T can STINK something awful after a couple of days).

Interestingly enough, I name all of my pets, except for my inverts.
I just call them "mantis" or "tarantula" or "beetle". I'm sure that some will end up with names, though.

Several of mine have names, particularly the adults. But juv.s and slings get a number and species listed, G.rosea01. It's too hard thinking of names for the tiny ones IMO... Then sometimes I name them one thing, they start doing something that earns them a name change later on. Like a large female A.seemanni named Cher, got loose and wondered around for a few days, I found her Tuesday morning. So now she's called Tuesday :D

Yeah, I *thought* we did it before, but I'm getting old and couldn't remember for sure. And using the search function never really occured to me, heh.

Senile at 19!

Edit: After looking at that thread, I realize why I didn't see it -- I wasn't even home during then. I was on vacation for a month and a half :p

I've named all 3 of my T's. But, like Mr. Monkey says, that might not persist as the collection grows. I've only been in this hobby for a few months, so I have yet to have anything die on me. *knocks on wood*

Most of our collection has names, but we only have 12 T's:)

My son named most of them.

G.rosea~ "Fang" & "Miracle"........miracle that it survived at PETCO! LOL!

Pt. SP. "Usambara"~ "Demon"

E. camp. (PZB)~ "Baby"

A. avic~ "Boots"

A. seemani~ "Digger"

All of their names suit them perfectly.
The other 6 are open for ideas:cool:
We will run out of names some day.

no names for any of mine, I have well over 100 assorted inverts (I have labels on most of the enclosures with their scientific names and common names along with their sex, if known)
my son has named a few of my reptiles though. as for when something dies I have more than a few large reptiles buried in the back yard, the inverts are "recycled" into a compost bin.......I have placed a few deceased inverts in the next door neighbors driveway (it is a rental and the renter is a redneck retard with no regard or consideration for other people living in the area).

I name a couple, my method may also inspire you to name yours. A lot I name after the dealers I got them from, to help remember where they came from to avoid bloodlines etc in the future. Some just have names for the fun of it though:

Examples:
H.Lividum - Bing (got it from a guy named 'Gareth Chandler' >> Chandler Bing from friends I think)

I think having an avicularia named 'boots' is mandatory within the spider world though ;) My versicolor is named 'Bootsy Collins' after the psychodelic funk-star ;) haha

All of our animals have names. The reptiles names are more creative than the T's names though. I think we'll probably stop naming them once we reach 20 lol.

~~~Psycho~~~
The irony in all that....the most expensive animal we have ( the cat) is named kitty.... real creative :?
If inspiration hits me I'll name a tarantula, but it's only hit me one out of 3 times. (I only have three T's.)
The P. murinus name is Dante, because it sounds like a demon's name to me!!
When my boyfriend's first T died, a G. rosea, I had a funeral out in the yard after we studied his body up close for a couple of days. His name was Mr. Jingles......=D (I DID NOT think of that one!)
I'm a police officer, and our department doesn't have rank (i.e. sergeants, captains etc..) There are a few officers in our department who want the department to have rank, we say they want their stripes (sergeant insignia). So I named my A. Seemanni Sergeant Stripes, or just the Sarge for short.
