I let my a big part of my backyard in Houston become a shrubland--I also fell a couple branches and logs and let them decay. I get to see all kinds of critters because of it.

Also get bit by all manner of critters for it.

It's a thankless job I tell ya.

very creative!
Yeah I don’t know 🤷 what happened here It’s like a big bug bomb went off I’d have to go to the park to hunt for stuff if I want to find anything. I’ve not done that in years but I might this year.
I used too see tons of grass spiders all over our yard now ; rarely a few at the end of fall .. and moths I rarely see even if I left I light on outside it’s like they were eradicated. No sightings of jumpers or orb weavers either .. I see baby wolf spiders that’s it.

You won't find any kind of biodiversity in a place where humans constantly destroy the environment and spray chemicals everywhere. Not to mention grasslands and shrub lands have a diverse amount of flora that supports an entire ecosystem of fauna...

What does mowed grass in a park support? Crickets and roaches?

Gotta level your expectations when you're in the city. I don't expect to find much of anything when I'm in LA.

I don’t search the mowed grass except around the stream , there’s loads of fallen trees on the trails I’ll go eventually. No guarantee I’ll find much of anything, looking under rocks mostly just find centepede and isopods , some spiders. Stone pedes are so tiny I’ve not tried keeping one in ages . Poor critters do better in the wild 😜..
Surely Crickets and roaches are there not that I can catch them. Usually they bolt ⚡ ..

I used to see the dog days ones a lot around here , but for some reason I don’t anymore maybe pesticides killed most them ? Or the concrete jungle itself .. :( man those things are loud, I even had a female one try and sting me with its egg thing once .. ouch 🤕..

Ain't nobody spraying pesticides on my lawn.

Most I'll do is a mosquito donut for the irrigation channel out front.

I read a large number of them are threatened because of encroachment on the forests/grasslands where they incubate for years. Hard to come out of the ground once it's been paved over.
