I know, I know! The subject line is a little risque, but I promise this isn't a porno ad (unless you count spider porno).
My husband and I just witnessed the 2 P. cancerides breeding. There had been some drumming activity by her a few days ago, but I didn't put them together because I wanted to give him time to settle in and also, make sure nobody would be hungry before the breeding.
The male had to climb out of his shoebox and into her sweaterbox and he ended up coming in from behind. As soon as she turned to face him, he immediately charged forward and grabbed her fangs. I think she was pretty startled and at first, I was worried someone was biting someone and I was just about to spritz them with my water bottle. As soon as I noticed he had her in position, his pedipalps flailing, I knew he was doing what he was supposed to do.
The funny thing is I never actually saw the palps go in because he decided to make her flip ALL the way over on her back! As soon as they finished their business, he made a run for it and she onlyhalf-heartedly pursued him.
As soon as we got them both contained in their respective containers, my husband said to me, "Daddy likes it on top!"
I've never seen a female spider flipped all the way over for a breeding! Has this ever happened before? Then again, this is
one big strong male, not one of those critters that is half the size of the female. He actually has a bigger legspan than she does. I think he's about the maximum size for his species.....around 8
inches in ls.
