I know, I know! The subject line is a little risque, but I promise this isn't a porno ad (unless you count spider porno). ;)

My husband and I just witnessed the 2 P. cancerides breeding. There had been some drumming activity by her a few days ago, but I didn't put them together because I wanted to give him time to settle in and also, make sure nobody would be hungry before the breeding.

The male had to climb out of his shoebox and into her sweaterbox and he ended up coming in from behind. As soon as she turned to face him, he immediately charged forward and grabbed her fangs. I think she was pretty startled and at first, I was worried someone was biting someone and I was just about to spritz them with my water bottle. As soon as I noticed he had her in position, his pedipalps flailing, I knew he was doing what he was supposed to do. :)

The funny thing is I never actually saw the palps go in because he decided to make her flip ALL the way over on her back! As soon as they finished their business, he made a run for it and she onlyhalf-heartedly pursued him.

As soon as we got them both contained in their respective containers, my husband said to me, "Daddy likes it on top!"

I've never seen a female spider flipped all the way over for a breeding! Has this ever happened before? Then again, this is
one big strong male, not one of those critters that is half the size of the female. He actually has a bigger legspan than she does. I think he's about the maximum size for his species.....around 8
inches in ls. :)

Yes, it happenes with different species, different ones breed differently. I've heard that happening with Megaphobema velvetosoma.

i realize this is a tangent but reading this post reminds me of how weird it is that arachnid females seem to resist mating so much. i really wouldn't think this would be a behavioral trait that helps propogate the species in the slightest...at any rate i'm glad human females aren't like that, well some of them aren't ;)

Maybe tarantula males just like their women playing hard to get.

Sorry to disappoint you guys, but we didn't take any pix. We were doing the breeding in the bathtub so he could escape from her without being able to run and hide under the washer or something like that. The lighting just wasn't very good, plus I figured we needed both of us to keep an eye on the spiders. Those Haitiians are NOT friendly little beasties you can just scoop up with your hand. They aren't the kind of T's I'd want to find in bed wih me, if you know what I mean. ;)

We'll be trying to put them together soon, if she seems receptive. As I posted in my breedin question thread (which only got ONE response!), he just made another sperm web yesterday.

if the males were smart, they would grow a tranquilizer gland next to the poison gland so that all they have to do is bite her, put her to sleep, hit it from tha back, and then calmly walk away without a care in the world!

hmm

thats the reason I dont like fellow tarantula collectors, they either need names like "Death Stalker" or "Doom Machine" and keep spiders only for shock value, or to prove some masculinity disorder, or they use a fascinating family of animals and put their own sexual difficulty referrences on it... both shouldnt be allowed to own pets, sorry

Interesting response. Who are you referring to?
