Hi all,

My A.seemanni is the wierdest spider I have ever owned. It is a 4" female that produced an infertile eggsac and has not eaten since (several months). Her abdomen is extremely thin to the point where the booklungs are on the side of the abdomen, not the bottom. She absolutely will not eat regardless of the method. She lets crickets crawl on top of her and sit. I always keep a full water dish and humidity around 70%.

Anyways, I found her today(alive) submerged in her water dish with just her legs sticking out onto the edges. Her booklungs are fully submerged and most of her body as well. Should I leave her alone? or is she trying to kill herself like some other people on the forum have had a problem with.

Any insight greatly appreciated for this wierd tarantula!

Thanks in advance,

Mark

Hey guy,
I have a Rose hair that put off eating for 6 months... adults tend to do this, noting odd, she didnt eat again till she molted, now eats like crazy. but as for being in the water dish? what temp do you keep the cage? sounds like it might be a bit hot for even a cold blooded friend. try keeping it at 70, I find that i have much success with Aphonos and such a temp.

hmmmm

You say her abdomen is extremely shrunken... did she emerge from her last molt like that? I had an Aphenopelma local to where I live that died in that condition after not eating for about a year no matter what I tried and I think the condition was a result of a bad molt that messed up her stomache. I'de prod her out of the water if it were me though. I assume you've already tried the food ICU? You might try that trick with a feeder serynge right between the ol' fangs I guess just to see if she can be coaxed to feed once she gets a reminder of what food is...

She is out of the water dish now and seems to be doing just fine. The cage temp is around 74 F. She is very skittish and psycho so i would not even consider trying to feed her with a serynge or anything. I know tarantulas can go a year even without food by choice, but I wasn't sure if it was normal to get so skinny when doing so.

I guess there really isn't much I can do. She has also abandoned her burrow which she used to lay her eggs in and such also.

hmmm...

try this stick her in a smaller cage and drop a cricket/pinkie or her head if feeding a pinkie spilt its head it worked with my usumbara who didnt eat for a month raise the temp to around 80-85 if you can raise the humidity a little bit not to much and watch her closely if all fails, then thiers a good chance she isnt gonna make it my usumbara made it o.k after doing this but getting her outta the smaller cage was a pain well good luck and watch her closely!
