Crafting in same room as jumper?

Was just wondering if crafting would be toxic to my jumping spider? Mainly the light smell or “fumes” from the glue. The glue is Elmer’s glue-all which is non toxic to humans, but just making sure it is ok around spiders too.

I'd be extremely wary of any fumes around spiders/inverts.

I personally haven't had any issues. I've used a bit of epoxy around them and haven't noticed anything off (granted I normally keep a window open and they are 10~ feet away from my workspace). Since Elmer's glue is water based, I wouldn't worry about the smell.

We craft alot and bring our Regals with us. Heavy scents we keep away from them, but others don't seem to bother them. Believe us, when they don't like an area they will leave it.

Non-toxic to who? You’re assuming too much!

Surely you don’t actually believe the non-toxic verbiage applies to anything not just humans.

Non-toxic to people. Just wanted to make sure that the small fumes were also non-toxic to spiders! 😊
This is something that has not been tested in a scientific manner, ie to put on a label.

I don’t use any fume product near my animals of any type.

Sorry, I replied before you updated your message. No, I don’t think it applies to any creature. That is why I made this thread, to see if whether it was toxic to jumping spiders or not. Sorry for the confusion. Should I word the main message differently? 😊

No problem. When you wrote it initially, your message implies everything is OK because it’s non toxic.

companies only care about humans as the end-user for obvious reason. ;)

There isn’t really much of a fume, mostly just a light smell. Just wanted to see if the light smell was worth the worry.

I think your question was clear.

For the record, I do my nails, and use low-VOC adhesives in the same room where my animals are housed. I keep the window open just in case, but it’s been years and I haven’t had any issues with this. I use high-VOC adhesives outdoors or in a separate room right beside a window to reduce fumes inside the apartment.

Bear in mind that the dose makes the poison. Good ventilation avoids a lot of potential issues.

Smell- made of molecules

Fume- made of molecules

Not a risk I’d take
Farts - made of molecules
Prey animals - made of molecules

Molecules aren’t the enemy, man. The form they take actually matters.

Is the poster working with prey animals…

Im not sure why your hyperbole has relevance to the specific example/words the OP was using

You might as well as wrote atom bombs instead of prey, those are made of molecules too.

Just objecting to the general principle that smells and fumes should be viewed as equally dangerous because they’re both molecules. I could also have said your lunch curry if you would prefer that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

For the record, I don’t disagree with your general principle of caution when you don’t know whether something might be harmful. I was simply objecting to your argument as stated. Call it pedantic.

Anyway, I happen to have a fair bit of experience with this, and the Elmer’s glues that are labelled non-toxic do not produce enough VOCs to do any harm to a jumping spider in a reasonably ventilated space. I mean maybe don’t squirt a big blob right in their enclosure but working with it in the same room as them is fine.

Thanks for the confirmation! Glad to know I don’t have to sacrifice crafts or my jumping spider’s health, or scramble to find a different place to do my crafts. 😁

Well, bottom line is all those wood glues contain polyvinyl acetate or ethyl vinyl acetate. In concentrated forms - not NORMALLY found in wood glues, these pose health hazards. So it's a question of the formulation of the various manufacturers and their adherence to their formulas. Simplified, yes they can have toxic fumes. Probably very low risk but no certainty. I believe ethyl acetate containing adhesives are confined to industrial use with greater precautionary measures. Concentrated, that stuff is very flammable.

Definitely you need to check your adhesives before use, whether you have pets in the house or not. Some of them are SUPER dangerous. However, Elmer’s Glue-All (the one specifically being asked about here) is regularly eaten and huffed by kindergarteners, and is about as benign as an adhesive gets.

People can like two things, man. Not three, though. That's too many things.

Thanks for all your help! If you’re wondering what I’m crafting, I am putting together a miniature house set from Amazon to do a photo shoot of my jumper!
