I am debating on having my corn snake put in a tank that is large, but on the ground or a smaller tank I can put a light on. Now, its getting to be winter and I dont really want to make him slow and lazy. the smaller tank (not too small mind you) is on a surface above the ground that I can have a heat lamp on. I can't put a heat lamp on the larger tank because it melts the top. I dont know if corn snakes really need heat lamps but he seems to enjoy it.

much thanks for the imput:)

Get a under tank heater and put it on the large tank. Snakes do better with belly heat instead of over head heat. Just make sure to use a thermostat on the heat mat so it doesn't get too hot. You want it around 85 degrees.

Thanks Waldo I'll definately do that
should I get one for all of the bottom of the tank or just a part of it?

Just part of it, the snake needs a warm end and a cool end.

Yep, I second that. Undertank heaters are best. Get one that covers about a third to half of the floor space of the tank, so that you have a cool side and a warm side. It's also best to have a hide on each side as well. That's what I do with my corns. How big are the tanks and how big is your snake?

also stay away from the petstore undertank heaters, basically the little plug in ones that are sticky and you stick it on. Get one from a serious reptile dealer, mgreptiles.com has nice ones along with thermostats for them.

the smaller tank is 30Lx12Hx12W and the larger one is twice the size. I know big, but he seems to make the most of all the space. The corn is app. 2 1/2 ft.

I will definatley look into buying from a breeder as well

thanks!!:)

I was always under the impression that a warm air temperature was required to help prevent respiratory infections

The substrate temp on top of the under tank heater should be about 88 - 90 degrees for a corn. Ambient air temperature on the hot side should be 80 to 85 degrees. Cool side ambient temps can range from 70 - 80 degrees.

Night time ambient temps should only drop 5 ot 10 degrees but never below 70. Humidity only needs to be 50-60%.
