I'm sure the lack of more recent updates speaks to the futility of that effort. Use scientific names 🌈

I wanna give up work, move to Cali, and become a ‘Baja Recluse’ on my own private slice of beach!

Seriously though, I love common names - but think it’s important to know the proper binomial nomenclature first and foremost.

My personal favourite: P. rufilata - ‘Redslate Ornamental’, or ‘Reddish Parachute Spider’.

I want MoonLion!
Back when I first learned of these, I heard of the name FIRST before I even knew anything about them. I thought "SunTiger!", well, my good friend Swifty showed me a female, and I felt the looks lived up to the common name. As we know most common names don't equal what we see.

Australia has some of the worst common names I reckon.

This is a "red haired tarantula/whistling spider"

These are "golden trapdoors", they are brown and red.

These are "brown trapdoors", several build vertical tube burrows and nearly all are metallic gold.

This is a "metallic tube spider", despite many not being metallic or tube builders.

These are "slender funnelwebs", despite them being in a different family to FW's and looking, webbing and behaving like curtain webs.

And literally nobody is even sure why we called these "mouse spiders"

Sorry if not all these are tarantulas, but I thought it was kinda funny and still relevant to the thread topic lol

Why'd you post a picture of a mouse on my internet spider forum

Cut us some slack mate,
You all don't need slack, matey. Such simple rules.
1. Never park your vehicle up against a bush or leaves of a low hanging tree.
2. Everything bites or stings. Some like to crawl in bed with you. Get used to it.
3. Never picnic within 100 feet of estuaries.
4. Practice your wave.
5. Swill starts at 17:00
6 BYO.
All covered.

You do NOT wanna be in Cali, 100° every day for the past week…:shifty:
