So the dead ants were opportunity kills as the spider protected it's web? Or do those spiders actually feed on ants? A natural resistance / tolerance to formic acid?

They'll eat anything they can catch from what I've seen over the years.

As far as I can tell with my resident Steatoda, they were primarily catching ants and not much else in the areas along the ant path. I assume this means they must be eating them.

I found one reference that states Latrodectus does feed on ants. Lynx also takes ants.
