clarification on "instar"

Hi all,

After doing some searching, I'm confused on the classification of instars. I've read that after hatching and a spiders first molt, the sling (is it even a sling at this point?) is considered a "1st instar". After the second, the baby is considered a "2nd instar"... and so on. With this in mind, is an unmolted, just hatched baby only an "instar" then?

Are "eggs with legs" considered only instars, or are they not awarded that status until a first molt? Are unmolted babies just "eggs with legs" until they molt, and THEN ultimately called "1 instars"?

Holy smokes... did that make sense?

I just however, read a post from someone here on the boards that said you call call them a "...N2 or 1st instar..." :? What is the "N" classification and how is it used?

When do you stop calling them instars? I have a B. smithi that is at least a 9 instar at this point.

Perhaps I should put down a blanket question and ask if anyone knows of a classification system for baby spiders.

I ask this because I'm looking to buy a few more arachnid family members, and have found several listed using the "N" classification.

The round eggs when ready to molt will pop out pac man style, the legs will just pop out of nowhere. It's really cool to watch. They will look like miny Ts at that point but cant really move at all, they can wiggle their legs a little.

eggs with legs (wiggling legs but not mobile)
first instar,(mobile but clumsy, and not feeding)
second instar. (feeding slings and fully mobile)

So is it
Eggs
Eggs with legs 1st instar
2nd instar mobile but not eating,
3rd instar fully mobile slings and eating?

That's what I thought. At least that was how I was defining the stages.

second instar. (feeding slings and fully mobile)

I believe from what reading I had done that it is more proper to refer to the eggs with legs as Nymphs. I think the eggs with legs is just a fun made up cutesy name since Nymph sounds so boring.

I'm with Ryan. Eggs with legs (or nymphs) molt into 1st instar, which look more spider-ish but are still living off the egg yolks in their bellies. Then 1st instar molts into 2nd instar, which is when they start to get hairy and look like real Ts. For most species, this is also when you start to feed.

4. when the show color other than yellow you have a 1st instar ready for a meal. This is a 1st instar

Your last picture is what I call 2nd instar or 2nd stage nymph, and a feeding sling. Oh well we all know what stage is a feeding sling that is ready to be sent out to others that's all that matters.

Just to put this to rest, no matter what everyone's "opinions" are, the Actual definition of 1st instar is the nymph or the first stage after the egg.
So eggs with leggs are in fact the actual 1st instar.

That's just your opinion. It's not the "right" one.

I do not use the term "nymph" in regards to spiders. And definitely not larvae.

I will always use the following terminology.
Embryo
Postembryo
1st instar...
