I was just reading up on chytrid infections among captive amphibians. As you know I've only got a Budgett's frog right now but definately plan on getting more amphibians in the future, so I'd like to know how exactly to go about administering chytrid treatments (I've heard about this, but am unclear as to how casual keepers do it) and how often I should do it.

I've heard excessive shedding is a potential red flag of the condition, but are there any other warning signs?

At that, how would I go about doing it on a Budgett's?

There is a fellow, Steven Busch, who breeds frogs and who has helped develop a treatment. Here are his instructions:

"The treatment he is using is Lamisil AT spray pump. It costs about $10 at stores that carry foot fungus treatment medicines and is not over the counter product. It is the liquid version. Mix 10 squirts (about 1 ML) in 200 ml (3/4 cups plus 1 1/2 tablespoons) of water that is safe for frogs i.e. no chlorine. Soak for 5 minutes for 10 days. Keep on paper towels changed after each treatment. Your habitat soil needs to be changed and destroyed as the fungus lives in the damp soil. "

And here is a rather interesting and lengthy thread he created concerning the treatment. Chytrid...The fungus among us

Thanks for that, but if I put my Budgett's, an aquatic frog, in that set up it won't dry out? I read a post about treating chytrid on Budgett's because of this but never got a clear-cut answer. Don't I also need a dish of water for the frog while its in the ICU? And how often should I do this? When should I start doing it with my Budgett's?

That's kinda what I was thinking...Can a Budgetts survive on paper towels? If you put a water dish in with the frog, he'll probably just sit in it anyway  Is it more like you need a sparse tank so the fungus as nothing to cling to? What about a setup with a nonporous land bank and a shallow bit of water?

Those are good questions, but ones I can't help with as I've never read what to do for aquatics. I've only been interested in the treatment of horned frogs since that's the only frog I currently own.

I looked a little more, and here is something else Steve Bush wrote that may be helpful...

"Aquatic frogs, ones that live in water as well as tadpoles can also be treated. Mix a 5 squirts to 200 ML solution. Make as much at this ratio as needed so that your tadpoles or frog can live in it. The solution and frog or tadpole live in the solution full time. Completely change the solution every 3 days doing this three times (9 days)."

Here is a link to the entire post. Chytrid treatment
