I waqs considering getting a chinese earth tiger and I was wondering if anyone has experience in keeping them. I found the below information about the possible deadly venom they have:
http://spiderpharm.com/Selhuwena.htm

In this report they are rumored to have very potent venom, they even attribute bites causing the death of cattle. I currently have an usumbara and a togo starburst, both supposedly having bad bites. I know that if the necessary precautions are taken, the more defensive T's are safe to keep as long as you are careful. I was wondering if anyone on the board has kept these or have opinions/advice on their care. Thanks!

Darby, I have the black form of this speices, and several other Haplopelma's. And basically the only time I have come in contact with them is moving into bigger containers. And since they are deep burrowers they are not out when I feed or mist there encloser. So it basically just comes down to respect when you do move them.I would go for it.

I guess the common name "Chinese Earth Tiger" could mean both Haplopelma schmidti and Selenocosmia hainana, as well as Ornithoctonus huwena. There was a taxonomic change somewhere there, but to make this brief (gotta go to work), I'd have to research that later. I think it was Selenocosmia huwena to Ornithoctonus. I'm sure there's an Asian specialist out there to straighten it out.
Both Haplopelma schmidti, and what is still known as Selenocosmia hainana are pretty hardy once acclimated. I've notice that they are prone to harbor endoparasites than other tarantulas. I've also noticed that some are imported with stow-aways, in the form of very large mites.
As with most Asians, don't get bit.
I forgot to add that many hobbyists believe that the black form (Selenocosmia hainana) is actually a geographical variety of Haplopelma schmidti. I've even seen it online as Haplopelma sp. "hainana". Volker?

Doug H, how do you like the black form? I am trying to decide between the black and the golden.I have been reading everything I can find on them on the internet. I have not been able to find a whole lot of information on them, besides alot of studies conducted on their venom.I think that I will order one in the near future. I have heard them described as being like an H.minax on steriods.

I kept many individuals of these over the years, just hope I can contribute something useful.
As LaRiz mentioned above, they are prone to parasites, both internal and external.I had a very poor survival rate with wild-caught adults direct from China. The external parasites like mites can be eradicated, but the internal ones cause alot of problems.... the wild caught adults are very hard to acclimatize because of this. I find that often they die or remain thin no matter how they eat.I had much better experience with captive bred ones, they do very well and eat alot.Of course,a wild caught adult can do well too provided a lot of intensive care is given in the beginning, first ridding it of mites/external parasites, keeping them on moist but not wet paper towels for a while then moving them to a permanent enclosure with sufficient humidity and ventilation. This is one other very important thing:ventilation.Any lack of moving air seems to kill them quickly, which is why many suffer during shipping. The enclosure must be humid, but have air circulating at all times, conditions must remain like that.Even so,there will usually be a 50/50 rate of survival for imported wild-caught adults;it depends on how badly the specimen is infected by internal parasites. However, adults that have been raised from spiderlings or captive-bred in the US/Europe do well.
As for their aggression and venom,I heard many conflicting reports;some say they kill, others say their venom is like any other large Asian.I think it is best to treat them with respect,as with any other Old World tarantula, and don't ever take the risk of handling them in a way that exposes you to a bite. One thing I noticed:they are not like many other Old World species;they don't chase and bite, run up an arm or run away like lightning;they just stand their ground and defend, not moving from the position and striking at anything moving near them.(This is usually when they are exposed in open air or being transferred).
I hope this will be useful.
Thanks

P.s:The care guidelines apply to both the yellow and black forms, they are almost identical in needs and behaviour. However,I have no info or idea about whether they are closely related or their venom.

Ah ah :)

This thread was (is?) about the venom potency of the "Chinese Earth Tiger" which is, if I'm not wrong, the common and crappy name of H.hainanum, btw my fav. 'Haplo' and pretty badass when venom is concerned. However under that common name sometimes jumps other 'Haplos' as well.

Anyway, remember Tarantino's "Kill Bill" ? Well, Pai Mei was the Chinese Kung Fu master. 'Shumai' is a Chinese dish. Hence my joke.

Dude I was still a baby in Russia when this thread was started...
Вы скучаете по России? Я говорю сербский, но Россия является сложным. Но я стараюсь, чтобы узнать!

"Славься, страна! Мы гордимся тобой!" ;)

Edit: Excuse my bad grammar, I´m not that good in Russian, but I am making some progress, trying hard to use the proper declensions for the nouns, prounouns and adjectives! Do correct me if you want. The last sentence is a quote so it should be correct, though :)

Ich fragte ihn, vermissen sie Russland? Dann versucthe ich zu sagen dass ich russiche sprache lerne, aber es ist sehr komplizert.

I had German for five years in school, but that´s 15 years ago. I hated it back then and I didn´t see the value in learning it properly. I regret that today as I would like to be able to read some of the classics of German literature in its original language. Now the best I can do in German is trying to hold a very basic conversation and even at that level I sound like a complete retard. When I run into Germans or when I´ve been visiting Germany, I just pretend not to know any German at all and speak English instead :zipit:
