I am having problems getting cypress mulch for my carpet pythons. What other mulches/substrates are good for them?

Orchid bark works for me, just make sure that you do not feed the snake on this substrate as it could be injected.

i think you mean injested? Eitherway I personally just use newspaper for my snakes, less hassle, and very easy to clean up. I do a couple layers of newspaper and then a couple layers of paper towels ontop of it, mainly for aesthetics, but also because it helps absorb a lot too.

I use aspen, not that my carpet python ever touches the ground.

If you're looking for something simple just use some indoor or outdoor carpet. It is easy to clean and can be fairly aesthetically pleasing. You also don't have to worry about the animal ingesting it and developing a GI impaction, nor do you need to worry about heavy growth of potentially pathogenic bacteria or fungi (Mader 2006) as long as you keep things clean and well ventilated.
cheers
