As promised, pics of the new addition... Sorry for the crappy quality. I couldn't win the macro wars with this digital camera, I'm afraid. They will improve as he gets bigger.

Sitting on the edge of his new home...

Going for a stroll on Mom's wrist...

Just as I suspected he would, my new spider named himself. His name is Bungee because he's a jumper and quite a daredevil. I knew that was his name after he climbed right up the tiny paintbrush I was using to gently herd him, and then hung off the bottom of it by only two legs displaying death defying arboreal acrobatics.

Also, just after the above picture was taken he decided he was going to go for a stroll up my arm and under my tank top. Sweat was running down my legs as the little guy ran up my arm out of my reach with my paintbrush, and then across my back. I could feel his little feet and was hoping he didn't decide to nest in my hair. This was a bigger concern for me than it might have been because my husband is legally blind and would not necessarily be able to see the spider well enough to help me retrieve him safely.

Fortunately after a few tense moments he emerged safely out the other armhole and continued his explorations down my left arm.

That's when I knew he'd had enough 'playtime' and coaxed him gently back in his delicup after only about 20 tries. Phew! He's quite a handful, but I love him already. =D

Yup. It's a good size. Not as fragile seeming as I was expecting. He has a pretty heavy tread for such a little guy - like he knows he's going to be Mr. Big someday. :)

If you look closely on the cup Bungee is in, you can make out 'geroldi' written on the cup. How's that for observative?

Cute little bugger.

Indeed. They weren't kidding when they said Avicularia species were fast. At first his sudden bursts of speed kind of startled me, but now I'm quite used to his mannerisms, if not always prepared for them. He's a real sweetie though - hasn't in any way acted aggressive or cranky. If anything bothers him he's just like "Run away! Run away!" :)

If you're easily amused something nifty to do with avic' s'lings is to allow them to walk on your hand, up your finger then outstretch your fingers, seperating them. Enjoy as the little spider leaps from fingertip-to-fingertip :)

Serves for hours of fun, but is tough getting them back into their houses.

I tried that, but Bungee is too much of an intrepid explorer. He never contents himself with staying on my hand. I guess I'm lucky he didn't go down my pants yesterday. Crack kills, you know. =D

Good luck with your new A. geroldi.

You'll love the colors, mine is a really cool electric blue/green in the right light.

Woo! Part of me wants to say that I can hardly wait, but the other part knows that raising this baby is going to be a little like raising a kid, and that I should enjoy each stage as he grows up.

Still, I've seen the adult pics and I am sure I will think Bungee is really beautiful in his/her adult colours. It's all so exciting. :)

Is yours a male or a female, or do you know yet? I'm thinking that if raising Bungee goes well I might want to breed. Of course I think I will have to just find other geroldi owners in Canada because cross border shipping could be a pain in the rear.

Try getting a 4 inch A. avic to go back into his jar!
Mine hates going home. His legs are long enough to grab the
entire top of the jar and hold on! It takes a few seconds to get him out, and more than an hour to get him back in!

If he can grab the entire top of the jar, maybe he needs a wide-mouth mason. ;)

How big is the setup you have him in? I have plenty of ideas for when Bungee is small, but I'm always on the lookout for future needs.

As far as making Avic. species go home, if Bungee is any indication, I'm going to have similar fun when he grows up. I always work with his delicup inside a bigger plastic container so I have more of a chance to catch up to him if he decides to bolt, but getting him back into his cup once he's had a taste of the 'great outdoors' of the kitchen table is not easy. I'll herd him into the cup and he'll run all around the rim before parking his butt on the outside wall of the cup. I try to herd him into the middle so I can close the lid, and he scoots off in a different direction.

And he's terrified of live pinheads even though the guy I got him from tells me he was used to eating live 1/4" crickets with their jumping legs removed. I was all excited about feeding him using tweezers and the first time I tried to hand him a cricket he took off in the opposite direction. I learned to handle him and have him walk on me pretty fast, let me tell you. :D
