Hey thar. I'm trying to start a brackish tank but I have no idea how much salt I need to get me to a certain specific gravity. So I don't have to waste a bunch of salt, could anyone tell me how much salt per gallon gets me 1.008? If you can't get that specific, if I can just get a general formula then I can do the math for the initial level and future sg corrections? :?

Your hydrometer should read exactly 1.025. If your fish wasn't kept in a brackish setup (like most brackish water fish at every major pet store) you will need to ween it onto salt VERY slowly.

P.S.
DO NOT use the conditioning salt pet stores sell for freshwater fish. You need the real sea salt with all of the trace elements and other goodies found in saltwater.

Hey, good luck with this project. I took an on line course on keeping brackish and salt water aquariums about 5 years ago but never actually did start one. In answer to the amount of Marine Salt needed, it is 2 table spoons per gallon of water.
Also be sure to follow mrbonzai211's recommendations on the slowly adding the salt (over weeks) and salt type as well.

Thank you very much. The fish I was wanting is actually a figure eight puffer and most of the things I've read on them say they are very low end brackish only needing a sg of 1.008. (that was a huge sentence, wasn't it?)

I wouldn't keep puffers communally as adults. They have very sharp beaks and often nip bits of flesh from one another. Usually this is not a problem most of the time, but it's not exactly uncommon either. Plus, especially with yellow spotted puffers, they bond like puppy dogs to their owners if you keep them alone in a tank. They will recognize you, have affection for you, and even let you pet them after you've had it long enough.

If you get a good supply of snails in your tank it should keep their beaks trimmed.
