My daughter found this guy out back. We took him in for the day and fed him some treats. Drought may be affecting his natural food supply.

Tomatoes

Grapes

Turds make a nasty stain on the carpet.

Hmm looks like a female. Possibly looking for a place to deposit her eggs?

I was gonna say female cuz of the short tail and long claws for digging a nest. I dont think eye colour can be used as a sex determiner.

We let him go. It had a concave bottom = male?
I'm pretty sure that is one of the definitive methods of sexing box turtles. And probably a lot of other species, but I couldn't say for sure. I also thought the red eyes were an indication of being male, but maybe that's a myth.

In box turtles (this species) it is. Males have bright red eyes, females have more of brownish eyes.
