Getting an adult G. pulchripes so wasn't sure if I needed to do anything else to the coconut fiber substrate besides pouring it in the cage and packing it a bit.

That's a great way to break the bottom of a glass aquarium. It doesn't need to be hard as stone, tamping is perfectly fine.You're good, just pack it as firmly as possible.
