The typical 'fer-de-lance' is Bothrops atrox

Bothrops asper is the 'Terciopelo'

But they do have a lot of common names, depending on the country. I hate them, I prefer scientific names all the way.

The origin for the common name "fer-de-lance" is Bothrops lanceolatus, described in 1789 by the french zoologist Lacépède
Bothrops atrox have, aswell as most other Bothrops ssp., different common name depending on country but the genus as a whole usually are refered as fer-de-lance - or lancehead vipers.
