there were skeptics saying she could've stored sperm from before she was captured (3 years prior to giving birth), or it mated with a different species in captivity...after doing some dna testing, scientists were able to prove, without a doubt, that there was no male shark involved.

I think the big deal was they didnt expect it to happen in sharks, and the fact it's a captive shark successfully reproducing.

another thing is that it has never happened with any shark or other cartilaginous fish. it's usually a big deal the first time anything happens.

imagine how crazy it would be if it happened with a human.
