I am thinking of getting a blood python. Do they make good pets. I am experienced with redtail boas and burmese pythons. How do the compare temperment wise?
Thanks, Blane

IMO if it slithers it makes a good pet they just all have some differences you need to respect.
If you want a Blood you can play with go with a CB Sumatran. They are pretty easy going as Bloods go.

I have a Borneo short tail python, which are very similar (and sometimes considered) a 'blood python'

She is a jerk. She wants to eat me. I love her because I think they are a wicked snake (I'm more a reptile guy than arachnids actually...18 snakes, about the same number of lizards), but I don't think you should expect them to be a nice calm, ball python like 'pet'. They can get pretty nasty, but when they are nice, they are super nice :) They get big and fat, and if they ARE nasty, they strike FAST and with their whole body. It's intense.

That sounds like something I can deal with. I just dont want something as vicious as the retics I have seen. Theyve acted more like a cobra than a python.
Thanks for sharing

In general Bloods are nasty, though there are exceptions. They have
one of the most powerful strikes in snakedom and I have often seen
people who are anxious to see a Python feed get severely startled
by it. One guy who stood on a stool to peer into a tank on a high
shelf, fell off and tumbled onto the floor when the large "Blood" unleashed
it's fury.

Bloods are great!!! Some do have nasty temperments but if you work with them they usually calm down. Just make sure you buy CB. The female I have is a doll baby and has been so ever since she was little. She also has a huge feeding response (as do all bloods). Their metabolisms are slow and coupled with a high feeding response they are prone to obesiety. The pictureof my blood is on here maybe a page or two back and if you check out pnovaks video you can see his try to bite him!!! Good times :D

I used to breed bloods back in the day. Most of my babies were born very docile and grew up to be puppy dog tame. There are plenty of breeders and the ones with good reputations will be honest about the temperment of their breeding stock/babies. If you source out the right babies they'll grow into beautiful docile adults.
