Hello everyone,

I just received this black trapdoor. I know it came in an Indonesian order, but I don't know anything about them. I know their venom can be bad, but how bad? What it's latin name? I made sure I gave it about 6 inches of substrate. How big do they get? If anybody can help it would be much appreciated.

trapdoor

I've seen trapdoors that presumably belong to trapdoor spiders along hilly roads in 2004 but i have never seen any trapdoor spiders in their burrows. I bought one some time after that and gave it 6" of peat. Poked a hole in it hoping that it wud burrow but it never did and eventually died.. hope urs is doing well

trapdoor spider that i bought

It looks pretty cool to me, but i can't help but feel that it looks rather vile, so sad that it died.. won't be getting trapdoor spiders anymore=(

how big is your trapdoor spider?
has it burrowed?
what have u been feeding it?
and what substrate are u using?

I have a mature male trapdoor at the moment. I'd recommed that you start a burrow for yours, or cover the cage until it starts one. Trapdoor spiders get stressed out very quickly in the open.

Those trapdoors you found look to be from a Liphistius sp.
I can't tell from the picture, does the spider have plates on its abdomen?

Plates? Would I have to flip it over to see these plates? The abdomen looks all soft to me. I made it a whole. It was in it this morning, but now this evening it's out of it. I also put it in a hidden place.

I think i remember seeing brown plates on the abdomen one day after it moulted.

Hairless spiders of unknown origin

It would be safe advise to say that all unknown species of larger tarantula type hairless spiders should be avoided or at best one should be quite careful of a bite from unknowns such as the one you are displaying.
I do not think there is a great deal known about many of the trapdoor species from either Africa, or southeast asia. I'd be careful.

Thank you all for the great info. I will definitely not get bit. The thing bites my tweezers as if it would like to kill them. I can't imagine how much venom it intends to inject and what it will do.

Oh it's eating already. I made it a hole and now it has covered that one up and made itself another hole. I hadn't really made the silk tube or trapdoor yet. I fed it last night and now it's in the hole. My buddy got one and his made it's entire home right away. Anyway I'm not so worried anymore. It is on it's way!
