Tiny corn snakes in particular are most likely to be bitey, as they're very easy to scare/hurt. But plenty of corn snakes of all ages/sizes bite, and it's not uncommon at all if you read any given snake forum--not every specimen of a docile species is going to be docile. There are mean ball pythons.

Or maybe he was just hungry and your finger looked like a pinky.

did you handle any rodents or other reptiles before holding the corn? most likely you smelled like food.

Have I had that happen? More times than I can count. {D Especially with hatchlings from sunkissed lines.

Sounds like a feeding response. Defensive bites they let go quick and assume the position to strike again.

I'd say the little'en was hungry. :}

I have a rat snake that was actually my first snake. Very calm disposition -- allows itself to be mauled by kids no problem, never shows signs of agression. About four or five years after I got it, I returned home from vacation, picked it up and WHAM -- right across the bridge of the nose. I looked at my girlfriend of the time (now my wife) and asked if I had actually been bit. She told me to wash my nose off because of the blood.

Goes to show that you never really know -- one of the reasons I always tell people that snakes can bite, even if they are unlikely to.

Cheers,
Dave

While we're at it... ;)

Yeah, some of my babies seemed a bit nervous. But then there was Aggro... He or she wasn't at all happy with stuff that moved or when you held him, and would basically attack until you let go, would go on biting time after time even for minutes (not that I held the little bugger longer than nessessary, not with that disposition). Sadly that snake died unexplained. Had been eating ok and suddenly it was dead. Dunno why. Sad, I had actually considered keeping it for myself because it was that little bit different. Grown up it could have been my toothless version of a rattlesnake or something.

My adult female tagged me twice too. First was a feeding response, I had not washed my hands after cooking (minced meat). I could see her charge up and aiming and I had just time tell myself "Hold still now old boy, or it will just be worse" ;). So yeah, I let her strike at my finger, had I pulled away she'd only hit harder because it was moving and I'd never been able to pull away in time. She wouldn't wanna let go at first.

Another time she bit me on the knee, just because she was a bit irritated and the knee was the closest part to her head, eventhough it was still a foot away. Pretty irritated I tell you! That's what unsuccessful attempts at lifting her get you, she gets cranky ;). She retreated emediatly after that bite and I sat there next to the tank and couldn't other than smile and get all warm and fuzzy inside because she was kinda so cute when she bit me :D

I guess the female I had for so many years was kind of blind or just teasing me whenever she would try to bite me... she only just grazed me once and I'm sure it was not cuz I'm any faster... perhaps just the timing. I did learn to observe her more ornery moods, and feed responses when I would forget to wash up after playing with my furry friends ;)

I found a better home for her, finally... but I sure do miss her.

My friend did the photography, hence the watermark. She also helped me find a loving home for Hollywood.

Thanks! :D
She was a beautiful girl and she really loved being handled when I had the time for her. I get all misty now that she's gone, but I know she's in a better home and she has another corn female for a bud.

I was handeling my corn a couple of days ago, and i noticed he was paying particular attention to my thumb. After watching him feed i reciognised this, as he was lookin for a good position to start eatin. A nd guess what he tryed it. Opend up his mouth and tryed getin my thumb in there. Im assuming he thought it was a jucy pinky.
Something else i saw him do, when he was a baby, after he tok his first pinky, he was sniffin around, and actualy bit his self!!! assuming he smelt the pinky on his skin!!!
