Hi all. I got up today and my “baby” AFS was out in the corner by his water dish, but he was sleeping. I might be just worrying too much, but him sleeping out in an open space rather than in his hide makes me a little nervous. His sub is completely saturated so I don’t think he’s super dry or if he just happened to end up by the water dish. But regardless, him not hiding some place private is making me a little nervous. Maybe I missed it somewhere, but I couldn’t find anything on here about sleeping in the open during the day. Everything I found talked about being active during the day which wasn’t what I was looking for. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I say “baby” because of how he’s still definitely super young, but older than an actual baby. I’ve had him for just under a year now but he was already several months old when I got him. He’s a lot younger than people usually get them in, but he’s over a year old so I just still call him a baby since I can’t figure out how else to call him. (This is a picture of him from a couple months ago, not from this morning because I know it was fairly dry looking in this picture)

Since my original post, I’ve also tried misting the moss since I was nervous that he might’ve been feeling a bit dry since he was laying by his water and he’s been sitting in that same spot but hasn’t curled up and gone back to sleep yet. Not sure if that helps at all, but trying to update as much as I’m able so you have all the information. Thanks again.

We need to know a few more details.
For example temperature, ventilation, why's the substrate super saturated and a photo of it today, an old photo tells us nothing.

The old photo was just to show his size. The temperature sits right around 75°, the sub was still moist because I just cleaned his tank and replaced the sub two days ago, so it wasn’t swamped or anything but it was plenty damp that I didn’t think it was too dry in there. I’m not home right now as I’ve been away for work all day, but when I get home in the next hour or so I can check it out and get a pic of him now. This was from last night where I took a picture of him, and he was in that same spot this morning. I’m not sure whether he moved overnight or not, but since he’s in that same spot I would assume not.

I have an AFS that does the same as well. She does this from her sling stage right up to her current sub-adult stage especially after a rehouse or maintenance. Since you just did maintenance for yours, its highly likely that the dampest part of the enclosure right now is the water dish. Give it some time and it'll be alright.

Sorry for the quiet. He spent the day by his water dish and that night, but in the morning he was still there so I misted a bit around the tank (not on him) and bumped his tail a bit with my tongs to see if he would move at all to make sure he was okay and not overly lethargic or anything and he retreated to his log. But then a couple of nights ago, he dug a big hole under his log using one of the walls of the log as a “ceiling” for his little hiding spot. However, tonight, I accidentally disturbed his burrow by picking up the log a tiny bit trying to make sure he wasn’t trying to start molting since I was worried that he might get stuck trying to do it in such a tight space. I know he’s fine, but just asking for myself and my own peace of mind… will he ever return to that same little “burrow” he made for himself, or will he not want to go back in there out of fear that he might be disturbed in his “safe space” again? I just feel bad because he seemed so happy and content in there and I don’t want to have ruined his happy spot for him. Thanks.

Nahh he should be alright. I do this to mine too when she hides under her driftwood and she usually panics a bit but she settles down eventually. Now she's so big she's finally using her cave.

Thanks. I actually took a shower and when I came out to check on him, he was back in his little hole he was in before so I’m glad he went back into his little comfy space.

LEAVE THE THING ALONE.

Keep checking will only stress it out and you'll end up with a dead scorpion if you keep fiddling while it's molting.

He’s not molting right now. I understand what you’re saying, but I’ve also seen where they can die if they try molting in too tight of a space like a deep and narrow burrow, so I wanted to make sure he would be okay in there if he was trying to.

They molt fine in their burrows it is what they do in nature. But interrupting their molt will stress them and lead to a bad molt. Once that scorpion seals the entrance of its burrow closed leave it alone. It will re-emerge weeks or months later just fine. Make sure the substrate is 100% moist to the touch.
