so in my old age (well older anyway lol) i am re-considering some scorpions to go with my Tarantulas (not in the same enclosures of course lol) so here is my story followed by the point of the post.

I have been in the T hobby for 20 ish years and after a 6 year break im making a triumphant return to T's
"Long long ago in a galaxy far far away" (when i was VERY young and new to the hobby) i had some scorpions also
I dont know latin names of any scorpions so bear with me....
3x death stalkers
2x desert harrys
1x emperor
And 3x unknown

I will admit i was young an stupid and had no clue how to set up an enclosure for them nor how to care for them.
Consiquently, they all had short lives in my care while my T's have always thrived and lived long healthy lives.

To the point.....
Now that im back into the T hobby and am starting to rebuild my collection i again find myself VERY interested in scorpions as well.

I want any/all suggestions, info, pictures etc on species ya'll would recommend.
What im looking for is......
1) active as possible
2) colorful as possible
3) hardy as possible
4) preferably large species

All criteria dors not need to be met BUT if any soecies come to mind plz plz plz inform me!!!!!!

Thanks in advance

Heterometrus spinifer. large, jet black, hardy. not very active, but us T keepers are used to that. moist deep sub for burrowing. water dish, cross vent. boom, simple as that. if only scorps were as colorful as Ts.. the dream. Pandinus sp. are great as well. same care requirements as the spinifer. not too much of a scorp keeper, but i know those are nice and big. P. cavimanus has some red on the claws, but is smaller i believe.

I find the rhopalurus junceus to be beautiful. I have never kept them so I can't speak on the hardiness or activity level.

I am quite partial to the parabuthus liosoma. Hardy, active and another good looking scorpion but not very colorful.

Above is a pic of mine.
Below is a professional shot.

Centruroides sculpturatus are very active and can be kept in a community with a nice arboreal type set up. They also look like creamsicles after a molt. Extremely hardy.

Centruroides gracilis are awesome too. Hardy, active and can be colorful.

Especially if you can get a hold of the red color form.

Hahaha. Wifeys. I dont blame her though. They aren't as cuddly as ts. Here two more colorful ones. I haven't kept these species but I know someone on here has and can chime in on their activity level and hardiness. The more colorful ones seem to be small to medium size, though.

I only have a few but I absolutely love my desert hairys Hadrurus arizonensis I have 2. Give them deep substrate like 5 inches or more I use a 50/50 mix of paver base and sand wet it and pack it in the enclosure and let it dry holds a burrow great. Always digging I can watch them for hrs excavating their burrows and if you set the tank up right they will burrow right next to the glassy his pic is before I double the substrate in this tank

I still adore Heterometrus madraspatensis for its large size and color combination (black and gold is sick!) plus someone in the classifieds has the 50$ each

I don't even have one but I saw one once and they are awesome! I do love my Pandinus dictator Because who doesn't love a massive jet black scorpion just short of 7 inches but he hides a lot as a warning since you wanted an active species. He's my profile pic btw my favorite scorp in my collection still.

Also H. Arizonensis is a fun species my male is really defensive and builds super cool burrows like shown above plus comes out to patrol every single night around 7.

Thnx all

So let me ask this.....

Rumor has it that scorpions will eat themseves to death meaning its possible to overfeed them causing death..... True or False????

Also, are they like T's in that females live far longer then males???? And on that note, whats general life span of a scorpion???

Life zpac depends on breed but I know the dessert hairys can live 20 years or so. Male or female in most species that I know of has no affect on life span. As for over feeding yes it is possible because one a scorpian reached adulthood it will stop molting unlike a tarantula and it is possible for them to become overweight so you have to keep an eye on them ;)

@Abyss Can the species be Hot or not?
Personally I love the Parabuthus species, especially villosus "oranje morph" & schlechteri. They grow large, very hardy and I think the coloring of those two are amazing.

PS. I want a Desert hairy!! lol, they look awesome.

Lol, nice. I have got some Heterometrus spp, or Pandinus spp (Still need to confirm their identity) and they burrow like crazy, the whole community which I have always stay in the same burrow and they are frequently changing their burrows as well. I can hear them during the night times when they are digging and moving substrate around. Like little excavator's working on a construction site :wacky:

Hot species are fine (i have had death stalkers) and i have kept plenty of the more defensive/venomous tarantulas like poecilatheria.
Im def not a rookie with keeping stuff like this just a rookieish when it comes to scorpions in specific

I know it was already mentioned above, but I also recommend Hadrurus arizonensis. They're pretty active for scorps, saw mine above the surface quite a bit and would build new burrows frequently so was always interesting to watch.

Very easy to care for, low maintenance, great beginner scorpion.

Nice i do like those ones so since ya'll say its hardy and a good beginner species perhaps i will start there :)

So moving on, whats the ideal enclosure/hide/decoration/water dish/substrate etc for a hadrunus arizonensis (desert hairy) scorpion lol???
Also, i assune crickets and super worms are a fine dinner same as T's correct?
