found this beetle today, anyone have any ideas.

It definately looks like a ground beetle (family Carabidae). An overhead, full body shot might help determine a genus, it's a big family!

I'm thinking maybe a Carabus sp., the same genus that includes the "fiery searcher", C. scrutator.
Cool beetle...have you tried to feed it? they're predators. You could try small crix and if they're not interested in that try something soft-bodied like wax wotrms.
