the most recommended substrate is play sand or tile...cal sand is horrid for many reasons that include impaction and high calcium levels...yes they can have too much calcium
As a "bedding" in general actually the most reccomended is non-adhesive shelf-liner :p But I agree cal sand is horrid.

i always feel that the shelf liner does not let them dig nor is it at all forgiving...i don't know if anyone has diggers but a few of mine are always throing sand around

That's why I used wheat bran with mine. It's cheap, easy to clean (clumps around the poops), biodegradable (I can compost it), looks natural, diggable, soft, and 100% digestible if ingested.

Mine was a rampant digger, and when I had him on a piece of linoleum cut to fit the tank, he just sat there and dug at the corner for hours. Upon suggestion of wheat bran, the moment I filled his tank up he dug to China and happily enjoyed himself.

Oh wow nice, where did you buy the wheat bran? I have a beardie and I might try that, seems very cozy? SO again, where did you get wheat bran?
