You can always get some and feed them a good diet for a day or two before you start using them as feeders. Most bait shops only feed them potatoes, which is not very nutritious. Also, look to see what conditions they are kept in. If they are in filthy, disgusting conditions, I wouldn't buy from them.
I believe they are raised like pet shop cricket just use for fishing, so I would imagine they are safe to feed, you could ask them what you are using them for and see if they can tell you what they have been fed.
I buy my crix exclusively from a very well-maintained bait shop. The shop buys the crix from a small breeding farm (local) that feeds them a mix of crushed dog food, veggies, fish food pellets (first time I heard of this as crix food), and various other foods. The crix are also given very very shallow running water troughs to drink from. I have visited this small operation, and it is spotless, and didn't smell bad at all. The whole operation is run by an older couple and their "kids", and all are avid fishing people.
I have yet to have any problems with my crix, other than a few mysterious die-offs (traced to the water I gave them, which is now changed to better water). All my spiders chow down on the crix with gusto.
Most bait shops get crickets from the same places that the pet stores do, the only difference is that they usually only get adult crickets because they are better for fishing. You still should look at how they keep them (the same should be true of any pet shop you buy from also) to make sure they aren't kept in poor condition. Sometimes you can even get a better deal ordering bulk (1000 +) from a bait shop than you can from a pet shop due to the bulk discounts they get from their supplier.
