Backyard sighting need ID...

I know these pics aren't great but my friend spotted this beauty in his backyard where his cat was about to go. He said it's about 6' long and a pretty vivid red. He lives in Redlands, CA. Can someone tell me what it is so I can tell him what ate his cat if he doesn't stop it from using the doggy door? Please.

Not to mention snakes are like fish--given sizes are often at least 50% bigger than reality. If it looked like 6', there's a decent chance it was actually 4'.
