My juvie B. smithi has the black color only on the front half of her carapace. All the individuals I've seen have the black go almost all the way to the back, and don't have a straight line where it stops. Do I have a weirdo? Or is this just a variant I haven't seen?

Look up brachypelma annitha for another variant. It is likely that all of them are the same species but scientific work is still being done to determine any differences.

EDIT* Nice Pictures :)

I think that your smithi is simply young. My smithi girl's black portion of the carapace grows with each molt.
