I borrowed this guy last week...I think he's way past his prime, but we'll see. So far, no interest shown by either party :(

Holley,

Are the B. smithi hard to breed or get an eggsack from? I've got a subadult of unknown sex and have the opportunity to pick up an adult female at a reasonable price locally, if I've not already missed it.

Botar,
the lowdown I've gotten on this species is they are very easy to breed, and very difficult to get an eggsac from....
Some folks advocate a cooling down period for the female after mating...approx 60 degrees for a couple months in the winter to try and stimulate eggsac production. Don't know that there are any hard and fast rules on it though! Mine won't go past first base LOL!

Well that's what I was thinking, about the eggsack. Thanks. I'll let you know if I get it tomorrow.

you're welcome Arachniphile! You can tell the male's owner, that so far...no luck!
No drumming, or any interest at all. He soaked for a long time in his water dish yesterday, but showed no interest in any food.
My female just sits on her cork bark, acting annoyed ;)
Botar....did you get the female today?

Holley,
With Brachypelmas i hear that it is best to cool them, im doing it with my breed emilia and my soon to be breed behmei. It is the natura breeding season right now. Im just putting mine into my garage witch is about 55-60 degrees. Its like microwave popcorn, cook for 2 months let sit entell eggs apear.

Sincerely,

Brandon

Holley,

Yep, I got her. Adult female B. smithi and 2.5 gallon glass aquarium with locking top and oak trim for $30. After hearing about all the steals some people get at pet stores, I never thought it would happen to me. I'm delighted. I have no idea how old she is, but she looks good. I've got her here with me at work right now. I'll post a pic of her here tomorrow.

Wow, that is a steal! Good find Botar, Hopefully your sub-adult matures out male, and you can give them a go at breeding.

Botar...what a STEAL!!!!!
lucky you! I paid $150 for my female, however, I can't complain, since I received 13 other spiders with her as well.
Brandon~ If they ever get that far, I will cool her..
here they are, doing what they've been doing...NADA!
They are oblivious!

Is the male the hair kicking fiend, or is that your female?

Haven't seen a pink butt like that since right before my smithi molted.

HI Holley,
They are just beautiful. We have two sub-adults. We think they are both female. It would be nice if one of them was a male. Anyway good luck with the breeding, Pam:)

Well I've got her here at work with me, since I picked her up on the way in. She's been quite the topic of conversation around here. I had some news people in to interview me about a train/car fatality and they wanted to talk more about the B. smithi.

LOL...the male is the hair kicking fiend...my female has all hers back since she molted. I'm really really careful to not disturb her unduly so her little fuzzy butt doesn't look like his!
