Hi everybody. I'm used to Poecilotheria, Psalmopoeus growing so fast and all. But I finally got my first Avic. Its an Avic avic sling, and a A. versicolor sling. I was wondering how fast they grow ect. Also on A. metallica, bicegoi(like i'll ever find one lol, braunshauseni, purpurea, aurantiaca, urticans. My little list, lol. Hard to beleive for me that you can hold them without any big risk. So many colors and varietys, I think I like this genera. i tried to start my sister off in this hobby by giving her a A. avicularia sling, and an A. versicolor sling, oh well, we'll see what happens.
Thanks,
Steve

They don't grow as fast as pokies. They have a medium growth rate, I'd say depending on temp and feeding rate, they go from sling to mature in around 3 years. I have an A. minatrix that has gone from 3/8" to 2" in about 16 months.

I have 8 different types of Avic's and I wouldn't worry about handling any of them.

I have 2 A. avics & 1 A. versicolor & all are growing pretty fast.
Hope this does not mean they are all males.:}
Anyway.........one of the avics was just a tiny speck when I got it last November...........just molted recently & is now 2 3/4".........so I think that is a pretty good growth, size wise, in that time period. :)
My versi was just about 2" when I got it 3-21-2003 & is now at 4" already. My other A. avic that I got in Jan 2003 was also at 2" & is now at 4".
Sooooo...........judging from my three.........I think their growth rate is moving along at a nice clip.:D

Spiders from the genus 'Avicularia' suffer from a slow, painful growth rate in my experience. Even feeding them abnormal amounts still results in slow growth.

What's worse, is the extensive 'pre-moult' stage, often taking anywhere upto 7 weeks (from my experience). I've 5 Spiderlings, (A.Avicularia X 2, A.Metallica, A.Versicolor X 2) And in the 3 months I've had them, only the versicolor has moulted more than twice.

Even spiderlings regarded as 'slow growing' have outgrew these for some reason. Perhaps due to my keeping conditions or something. Here's some of the s'lings that've outgrew my avics:
*H.Gigas
*L.Striatepes
*C.Fimbriatus
Hell, even my E.Pachypus moulting times from 1.5" to 2" was quicker than that of A.Avic goign from .5" to .8"

A mon avis, avicularia spiders are dull, drab and weary. The colouration DOES make up for it, if they ever emerge from the infernal thick white webbing :/

Meh!

We need to hook you up with some American desert Aphonopelma species so you can see abnormally slow growth. I've got some Flagstaff orange slings I've been raising for more than a year - they're still baldies in a sling vial

I'd go with the medium growth evaluation. I started with a couple of 1/2" A. versicolor and A. avicularia slings about 17 months ago. Their legspans are approaching 3" and both have full adult coloration at this point.

Are the A. Bicegoi's that hard to find? I want to get one of those but had to pass on one that I found. Just wondering now if they are that hard to find I should have gotten it?

Errkk! And I thought the avics were slow! That'd irritate me to the point of ignoring them. Daily avicularia check of "has it moulted yet... nar.. maybe tomorow" got to the point where I'd check every two days, then every week. With these aphonopelmas it'd be monthly

Maybe the reason that mine have grown quite fast is that one.....they may all be males......and two.......it is quite humid here. I do NOT mist the enclosures.......only have a waterbowl & I do feed them quite often.......couple times a week because I enjoy them hunting the crix. They are not overly fat either, just a nice well-fed look.:D
My avics are out on a daily basis for me to enjoy their beauty & hunting talents. Maybe I'm just lucky with these three as they are great feeders & readily viewable. :D
