Arthropod phylogeny!

This is a phylogeny of the entire phylum arthropoda, including extinct species. This has been a long time in the making, but here it is now.

As you can see, it's pretty big, because arthropods are crazy diverse.

- Groups in bold are extant, unbolded groups are extinct
- Groups that in end in question marks are of uncertain phylogeny
- Groups in quotation marks are names I coined for clades that don't have names yet (this will be further elaborated in the notes)

Spoiler: NOTES

Harpacticoida is redefined. Polyartha is a seperate order, Canuelloida.

Nematophora now contains only Chordeumatida and Callipodida

Neoschistonata is a placeholder name for the clade that contains the remains of baetoidea and heptagenoidea (though in retrospect I think Schistonoidea would have made a better name for this group)

Corydiidae includes nocticolidae

Pansarcoptiformes includes sarcoptiformes and all former endostigmatids close to them

Endeostigmata reduced to be monophyletic

Pseudendostigmata is defined to to be a monophyletic cluster of former endostigmatids that is a sister group to all remaining acariformes

Callipanellidae includes Nymphonidae

Byrrhoidea is split between buprestoidea and elateroidea

Pancucujoidea includes the paraphyletic Cucujoidea as well as Chrysomeloidea and curculionoidea

Drepanoidea includes mimallonidae

Zygaenoidea is reduced

Atracheata refers to the unamed lost trachea clade

Liciatoroidea refers to the 'Oval Calamistrum' clade

Your image uploaded tiny. Is this basically just gluing together a bunch of different phylogenies, or have you used raw genomic data from the studies listed?

I edited the post and posted an imgur ilnk which should be readable. Yeah, I did just glue together a bunch of pre existing phylogenies.

Ah, I just noticed you said right in the OP that this includes extinct groups, which would have answered my question if I'd read it properly
Any sense of the relative confidence in the relationships between and within various clades and the overall arrangement? Obviously some clades will have stronger support than others by necessity. It would be nice to have an idea of which clades were determined by genomic data and which by phenotypic data, and how well supported these are.

How come for Zygentoma and Diplura you stopped at order and didn't go to the know families? I still think of it as Entognatha sometimes including diplura collembola and protura, before elevation of Ellipura from subclass to class and the monophyly seperation of Diplura. It all get confusing with some data suggesting monophyly of Collembola and molecular relationships between Protura and Diplura being grouped together as a clade.

To a degree it's somewhat arbitrary. The primary purpose of the tree was to be a meaningful showcase of diversity, and I didn't really think it was necessary to go into detail for diplura. As with Zygentoma, idk, I just don't remember finding good family level phylogenies. There are probably some out there. But if I keep fretting over details like these, it'll never end!

I don't remember all the exact details of all the studies, but in some it was primarily morphology, some it was primarily genetic, and some was a mix of both.
